Bulletproof Coffee Benefits and Its Origin
The first time I heard the term ‘Bulletproof coffee’, I thought “What the heck is that? Am I going to be 10 feet tall and bulletproof if I drink it?” After trying it out, I found that I am still not 10 feet tall, nor do I believe that I am now bulletproof. But I am a couple pounds lighter and can go till lunch without my stomach wondering if my throat had been slit because I didn’t eat breakfast. It is fulfilling and energizing, with a luscious, frothy texture.
But what is it? Bulletproof coffee, created by biohacker Dave Asprey after a life-changing experience with yak butter tea while mountain climbing in Tibet, is a mixture of coffee, butter and coconut oil. Frankly, I think that sounds kind of nasty and conjures an image of an oil slick floating on the coffee that you must choke down. But it’s not at all like that awful conjured image. It is delicious and can be good for you and your brain. With the right ingredients, you are feeding your brain the good fats it needs to perform at its peak and satiating your hungry stomach in the morning. The recipe is quite simple: high quality coffee, grass fed butter or Ghee, and MCT oil (Medium-Chain Triglyceride oil- a refined derivative of coconut oil that is liquid, colorless and tasteless). That is all there is to it!
Some tips for making your Bullet Proof Coffee:
Be sure to ‘burp’ the blender container after placing the lid on the hot mixture. The heat will cause the lid to pop off when the blender is turned on. I put the lid on, then open it a little to allow the built-up hot air to release before blending. And hold that lid on tight! I have learned from experience, my friends…hot stuff in a blender can be explosive! 😐
Ease into the full amount of MCT as stated in the recipe. Start with a teaspoon, then move up to 2 teaspoons after a few days (or when your digestive system says it ok to proceed). Let your body adjust to this oily wonderment. If you start out with the full amount, you will likely spend some time running to the restroom. 😐 And your coffee will get cold while in you’re in there. ☹
You can usually find MCT oil in the grocery store near the dietary supplement section. There is a Bulletproof named brand that is quite a bit more expensive than other brands on the shelf. Some people swear by it, but I have used both and didn’t notice any difference.
If you want a little added flavor – add some cinnamon or vanilla or almond extract. You’ll get some extra flavor without the sugar and excess ingredients in the flavored coffee creamers and syrups that would keep your body from burning fat for fuel. 😊
If you’re not a coffee drinker, you can do the same with any tea.
I can’t take credit for creating this wonder, but I can say it’s delicious and so much better than I imagined it could be. Follow the link below for more information on what it is, where it came from, the recipe, and why it’s good for you. Enjoy!
